Partner Spotlight: United Way + AccessHealth
Since 1977, the collaboration between AccessHealth and United Way of Greater Houston has been a driving force in improving healthcare access for low-income, uninsured, and underinsured individuals and families in Fort Bend and Waller County. This enduring partnership has expanded over the years, with both organizations working together to meet the evolving needs of the communities they serve.
In a recent conversation, Mary Vazquez—the Vice President of Community Outreach for United Way of Greater Houston—provided insight into the success of this longstanding collaboration and the milestones that have marked mutual progress. Palak Jalan, Chief Operations Officer of AccessHealth, also shared her thoughts on how the partnership has benefitted AccessHealth and aligned with its mission.
A Shared Mission of Service
United Way's partnership with AccessHealth has always been focused on one common goal: improving access to comprehensive health services for those who need them most. For nearly 50 years, AccessHealth has been a vital United Way-funded partner, and the collaboration has led to significant advancements in healthcare delivery for vulnerable populations.
Milestones That Mark Progress
Mary Vazquez highlighted key milestones that underscore the success of this partnership:
1. Mobile Clinic: In 2001, a United Way grant enabled AccessHealth to launch a Mobile Clinic that served Waller County. This innovative solution brought healthcare to underserved areas across the county, providing essential care at multiple locations weekly. In 2018, efforts ramped up to establish a permanent AccessHealth clinic in Waller County. This became a reality in mid-2021, offering the community a long-term healthcare facility to access vital services.
2. Integrated Client Journey Technology: AccessHealth’s involvement in United Way's Integrated Client Journey Technology Governing Body in 2022 marked another significant milestone. This collaborative project is designed to streamline services and improve data-sharing across public, private, and civic sectors, ultimately helping individuals access the coordinated care they need.
Reflecting on the Partnership
Palak Jalan shared how this partnership has been incredibly vital to AccessHealth’s success:
"One of the most impactful aspects of this partnership has been United Way’s role as a thought partner. They have worked alongside us in a collaborative way, providing valuable insights and advice that have helped shape and refine our approach to addressing community health needs.”
“In addition to this, United Way has played a key role in fostering data-sharing initiatives, which have allowed us to better understand community trends, identify gaps in services, and ultimately enhance the effectiveness of our programs. Their support has been instrumental in helping us expand our reach and broaden the impact of our work across the community.”
Shared Values for a Stronger Future
On how working with United Way aligns with AccessHealth’s mission, Palak added:
"Serving communities across the Greater Houston area and improving quality of life is a common goal. Our mission extends beyond just healthcare to include support in other critical areas, such as legal assistance, financial help, food security, and transportation. These are all key components that help ensure the well-being of the communities we serve."
At the heart of the AccessHealth-United Way partnership is a shared unwavering commitment to creating positive change. The collaboration is not only a model for success, but a powerful example of what can be achieved when organizations work together for the greater good. The future of this partnership promises even greater growth, ensuring that the most vulnerable populations will continue to receive the comprehensive care and support they deserve.
